Here’s nfrabfiisk
a cool idea from regular commenter
Since we commenters live not just in the USA, but also in Europe and Australia and New Zealand (and that’s just that I know of), wouldn’t it be fun if we would all post a little ‘happy new year’ or whatever around our own midnight, so that we can see the new year arrive across the planet?
Yes!! Feel free to add your wishes for the new year! This is a lovely connecting idea! Happy New Year (in advance) – L.

Another (slightly belated) Happy New Year from the Blue Mountains, Australia. I’m so glad to be part of this worldwide community of people striving to raise a generation of independent and resilient young adults who have had the chance to immerse themselves in the grand adventure of childhood.

We have a local tradition of commercial fishermen setting off any emergency flares remaining from last year (over the harbor or town, so nobody mistakes them for real emergency signals). You don’t want to keep them around anyway, because they go inert. Then they buy more as soon as the fisheries supply stores reopen. So we just spent 20 minutes watching red lights float down through the night.
Here we light fireworks ourselves. Every year the country shoots a couple of hundred million euro in fireworks up into the sky and smoke. Not bad for people known for their stingyness. I walked home around 2 am and people were making bonfires in the middle of the streets. With the firedepartment circeling the neighbourhood to put out unattended fires and trying to manage drunken stupidity. Everybody was really friendly while, not trying to blow themselves up.
Happy New Year 2015.
I took my four children to Darling Harbour where we saw both the 9pm and midnight round of fireworks. In between the two, I sat on a park bench. They knew where I was sitting and they ran off. Often to my ignorance of their actual location but it was somewhere in the playground that was chock full of children as hundreds if not thousands of strangers walked past the area.
It was a wonderful night. Really good for the kids as they grew up in a town that doesn’t put anything on for young families on NYE. Only boozing so this was excellent for them to experience.
😀 😀 This is even more fun than I thought 🙂
Anyway, unlike the Brits, going for a swim in the winter didn’t get cancelled here (‘nieuwjaarsduik 2015’, new year’s dive), although it is organized by the city so doctors and ambulances are present in case someone gets a heart attack.
Another tradition: a 156 hour radio show! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_2000
@Nadine: It’s more like 65-70M actually… Though we don’t know what was spent on the illegal stuff of course… :-/
I have been up for several nights with a sick baby, so last night I fell asleep on the couch at 8 p.m. The baby is still sleeping, so – Happy New Year from Universal City, TX! *quietly blows celebratory paper horn*
