Friends, it has happened. We have changed the course of parenting — and law. Loving moms and dads in Utah do not have to worry that they will be arrested or investigated simply for trusting their kids to walk to school, play outside, go to the park. Only 49 states to go!
I am blogging at Let bdnfizbrss
Grow, as I now am head of a non-profit (rather than me just writing in my living room). Please join the conversation — and movement — there!

YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MINDS. IN TODAY’S WORLD.
YOU BEST SEEK HELP. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS FREE RANGE PARENTING
I FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR CHILDREN, THIS BEST BE KEPT IN UTAH AND NO WHERE ELSE.
I NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. JUST LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN AT THE HOSPITAL AFTER YOU
GIVE BIRTH AND LET THEM TEND TO THEMSELVES. BETTER YET, WHY BOTHER TO HAVE CHILDREN
YOU INSANE PEOPLE.
Carolyn, you are welcome to share your style of parenting with others, but you are not entitled to force your parenting style onto the rest of us. Just because it is a different style than yours doesn’t make it wrong.
If you don’t like or think a public policy or law is incorrect, gather data and information and take it to the appropriate authorities showing that to be the case. That would be a better use of your time, instead of criticizing and attempting to belittle people who have a different take on life than you.
I am surprised that something like this has to be signed into law. I grew up playing outside, walking to school, and basically being a worry free kid. If challenges arose, my parents would speak to me about them and we would take steps to deal with them. but they trusted me, and my actions gained and strengthened that trust. I let my own kids play outside, walk to their bus stop, and basically do not treat them like they are living on a leash. If something were to happen, I would expect the police to investigate that matter professionally and with common sense, and then pass judgement. While it is true that the world and society has changed from what it was 30 years ago, I refuse to raise my children in fear.
We always walked to school (elementary 1 mile) or took the bus if it was inclement weather. rode our bikes to the pool (1 mile) or played in the neighborhood w/our friends growing up. our parents would come out and call us in for dinner. too much helicopter parenting these days. sure bad things happen, but that’s life. you cannot protect against everything. we raised our son the same way. i too refused to raise my child in fear.
i’m stunned to see parents not only drive their kids to school everyday, but walk them to the front door holding their hand.
Thank you. Let’s bring SANITY back to parenting. Children belong to their parents not the STATE.
