Want to make a ton of friends? This phrase may be the key: “I love my child, but don’t think s/he is particularly gifted at…anything.” Here’s one mom saying just that. Join the conversation at Let Grow!
My daughter is bright, tested into the “gifted program” at her school, yet she has to work hard. And secretly or not so secretly I am happy. It has built a work ethic and empathy. And she got her first C and life did not end, and yes, she got into college.
My daughter is extremely special to me. I would take a bullet for her. (And living in the city where we hear gun shots at night that is not a passing statement.) But in this world she is just not that special. To be special she will need to work hard and do something to distinguish herself from others.
Passing a test in third grade – even at the 99th percentile – is not enough to be more special than others. You earn distinction; it is not given by a trait you had when you were born.
